Demoralizing! Gruesome! Unsuitable for the nervous! Banned for “strangeness”! Blasphemous! Morally debased! It must be 1931’s Frankenstein!
Don’t miss this Universal monster classic at the Senate, starring Boris Karlof as the monster from Mary Shelley’s famous gothic novel about the folly of man and the potentially destructive nature of creation. On its release a sensational and controversial hit, (see above) it remains true to say that it’s alive . . . with lavish photography, iconic makeup, and timeless chills and thrills!
And before the feature we are excited to present, with live organ accompaniment from Dave Calendine, a short silent film version of this familiar tale. Produced in 1910 by Thomas Edison’s Edison Studios, this one-reeler is a very loose but fascinating adaptation. It is the very first screen appearance of Frankenstein and a great chance to behold a feat of early 20th century technology, the Mighty Wurlitzer theater pipe organ in action!
