The original version of a holiday classic!
Doris Walker (Marueen O’Hara), a no-nonsense Macy's executive, desperately searches for a new store Santa. She hires Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) who insists that he's the real Santa Claus. But, he has many skeptics like Doris and her six year old daughter, Susan (Natalie Wood). So Kris goes to court to try and prove it. Is he the real Santa Claus?
Directed by George Seaton and produced by William Perlberg, Miracle on 34th Street earned a number of awards upon release and even more as the filmed gained historic significance. Edmund Gwenn earned the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, while Valentine Davies won for Best Writing, Original Story, and George Seaton won for Best Writing, Screenplay. The film was also nominated for Best Picture but did not take home the prize. Natalie Wood is just 8 years old in her first big co-starring role. Surprisingly, the film was originally released in June because Fox executive Darryl F. Zanuck thought more people would attend the film in warm weather. The holiday season setting was carefully kept out of promotional materials at the time. We’ll be screening the original black and white version of the film, but Miracle on 34th Street was one of the first full-length black and white films to be colorized.
