They Live (1988)

  • Senate Theater 6424 Michigan Avenue Detroit, MI, 48210 United States (map)

Obey. Consume. Submit. Do Not Question. Conform. Come to the Senate Theater. Do Not Think.

Nada, awesomely played by WWE legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, arrives in LA and discovers a modified pair of sunglasses that reveal the hidden truths of the world. Most humans are actually formaldehyde faced aliens and all advertisements are subliminal messages ordering the remaining human race to Obey.

Only here to chew bubble gum and kick ass (he's all out of bubble gum), Nada and Frank (Keith David) take on the aliens, but can they stop the invasion?

Written and Directed by master filmmaker John Carpenter, this quintessential 80's classic served as a primary inspiration to famed American artist Shepard Fairey and his OBEY clothing line, as well as his street art, many of which are around Detroit. John Carpenter also wrote this perfectly crafted score.
