  • Senate Theater 6424 Michigan Avenue Detroit, MI, 48210 United States (map)

Q & A with Red Wings organist, Lance Luce, and organ chamber tour directly following the film.

Whether performing for Cecil B. DeMille, or Beyond the Rocks director Sam Wood, Gloria Swanson was ALWAYS ready for her close-up! Enjoy this sumptuous film accompanied by Detroit's favorite Detroit Red Wings organist, Lance Luce. He'll demonstrate that you can love both sports and romance as he brings to life the sultry and only on screen pairing of sexy silent film icons Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino. The film is based on the best-selling romance by Elinor Glyn and was shot on location near Catalina Island in California. It tells the story of Theodora Fitzgerald (Swanson) who marries a wealthy older man for the sake of her family. On their honeymoon trip to Europe she repeatedly encounters the handsome Lord Bracondale (Valentino) and despite their noble efforts, they cannot stay away from each other. Directed by Sam Wood. Written by Elinor Glyn (based on the novel by), and Jack Cunningham (scenario). Starring Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino, and Edythe Chapman.

Beyond the Rocks was long considered lost, but a nitrate print of the film was discovered in the Netherlands in 2003. The film was restored and released on DVD by Milestone Film & Video in 2006. Learn more about the restoration of the film in the video below.
