In the 50s and 60s when drive-in theaters were booming, the monster movie boomed, (and smashed, and maimed, and lumbered with ill intent) right along with them.

The Wasp Woman, directed by Roger Corman, (The Little Shop of Horrors, The House of Usher) was one among the horde of these cheaply produced horror films designed specifically for teens and the drive-in market. It tells the tale of an insecure cosmetics executive and her doomed attempt to avoid the unfortunate side effects of aging, which soon transforms her into a homicidal insectoid monster.

And while we can’t offer a drive-in experience to go along with all this 50s B-movie fun, we can offer what we consider the next best thing: a free walk-in movie in the Senate Coney Lot, next door to the theater on Michigan Avenue.

The concessions and bathrooms inside will be open, but don’t forget to bring a chair and a sense of humor. You’re going to need both to fully enjoy The Wasp Woman.

The Senate Theater and The Detroit Theater Organ Society is supported by The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and The National Endowment for the Arts.
