The Fabulous Senate Theater
By Chloe Malagar
In the Fall semester of 2022, a group of Wayne State students filmed documentaries all about our fabulous Senate Theater. Follow the Senate’s treasurer Lindsay Robillard and volunteer Tess S. through a tour of the theater’s facilities, curiosities, and rich history.
The process of filming was a fun and formative experience for everyone involved. Take it from the director and Senate Theater volunteer, Brea Battaglia. “I wish I had used a bit more of the footage to show just how big and beautiful the theater is,” Brea says. “I could lose hours just looking around at all the history in there. I gotta go back to volunteer or see a movie soon.”
And take it from me, the assistant director of the crew. It was my first time visiting the Senate Theater, and I was gobsmacked. Ideas for cinematic shots came to us with ease, given how ornate the architecture is, and how fun Lindsay and Tess are to talk to. I came in as a movie-maker, but I’d love to someday soon return as a movie-goer!
Below are links to two of the short films produced. Check them out and catch a movie at the Senate! Upcoming events include screenings of John Waters’ Polyester (1981) on July 15th, and much more.
Additionally, consider being a volunteer! Help restore the theater’s majesty and preserve the Mighty Wurlitzer organ. Opportunities include ticket sales, concessions, and more. You won’t want to miss being part of this passionate, supportive community.
Stay tuned and stay cool in the beautiful summer weather!
